2 Days in Copenhagen Before a Baltic Cruise: My Favorite Experiences & Hidden Gem Tips

Two days in Copenhagen left me wanting more.

After studying abroad here during college, returning years later felt both familiar and wonderfully new. I arrived two days before boarding Silversea’s Silver Dawn for a Baltic cruise, giving myself time to explore one of Europe’s most charming capitals before setting sail.

Those extra days turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip.

With colorful waterfront neighborhoods, incredible food, fascinating history, and one of the most walkable city centers in Europe, Copenhagen deserves far more than a quick overnight stop.

If you’re planning a Baltic cruise—or simply dreaming of Denmark—here are my favorite experiences and a few Hidden Gem tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Stay Near Nyhavn—Then Wander Beyond It

If you’ve seen photos of Copenhagen, you’ve seen Nyhavn.

The colorful 17th-century harbor lined with historic ships and lively cafés absolutely lives up to the hype. Better yet, it makes the perfect home base for exploring the city.

I stayed at a charming historic hotel just steps from the harbor. After an overnight flight, having my room ready at 7:30 a.m. was a welcome surprise, allowing me to settle in before heading out to explore. The complimentary bicycles outside the hotel made getting around even easier.

One of my favorite moments came early Monday morning, strolling Strøget, Copenhagen’s famous pedestrian shopping street, before the crowds arrived. Shops slowly opened around 10 a.m., creating a peaceful window to experience the city waking up.

Hidden Gem Tip

Rent a GoBoat, a small electric boat that you captain yourself—no boating license required. Some even offer picnic packages. Reserve early on sunny days because they’re incredibly popular with locals.

Climb the Round Tower for One of Copenhagen’s Best Views

One of Copenhagen’s most unique landmarks is the Round Tower (Rundetårn).

Built in 1643, it’s famous not for its stairs—but for its wide spiral ramp. Designed so horse-drawn wagons could transport heavy astronomical equipment to the observatory above, it’s unlike any tower you’ll visit in Europe.

The observatory remains active today, while the tower has connections to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, who referenced it in his fairy tales.

The panoramic views across Copenhagen are well worth the climb.

Hidden Gem Tip

Most visitors admire City Hall from the outside—but don’t stop there.

Walk inside to admire the beautiful architecture, watch local weddings taking place, visit the fascinating Georg Jensen clock exhibit, and head upstairs for one of the city’s lesser-known viewpoints overlooking the grand hall below.

Eat Like the Danes

Copenhagen’s culinary reputation is well deserved.

While the city is home to world-famous Michelin-starred restaurants, some of my favorite meals were refreshingly simple.

Fresh salmon and cod, sweet Nordic prawns, blue mussels, locally brewed Carlsberg, buttery Danish pastries, and exceptional coffee reminded me that great food doesn’t always have to be elaborate.

The quality of ingredients is consistently outstanding, whether you’re dining in a fine restaurant or grabbing lunch by the harbor.

Hidden Gem Tip

Don’t miss Denmark’s beloved Sunday cake tradition.

Find a neighborhood café, order homemade cake with coffee, and slow down long enough to enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures.

My Biggest Copenhagen Travel Tip

Buy truly broken-in walking shoes before you arrive.

Not just comfortable shoes—broken-in shoes.

Copenhagen’s beautiful cobblestone streets are unforgiving, and I logged more than 22,000 steps in a single day. I ended up purchasing a new pair of sneakers during my trip because the ones I packed simply weren’t enough.

Your feet will thank you.

Is Two Days Enough in Copenhagen?

Honestly?

Two full days gives you a wonderful introduction, but I would recommend three if your schedule allows.

Extra time lets you enjoy museums, nearby castles, coastal villages, or simply experience Copenhagen’s relaxed pace without feeling rushed.

It’s also one of Europe’s best cruise embarkation cities, and arriving a couple of days early provides valuable protection against airline delays before your ship departs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days should I spend in Copenhagen before a Baltic cruise?

I recommend arriving at least two full days before embarkation, with three days being ideal if you’d like to explore beyond the city.

Is Copenhagen expensive?

Yes. Denmark is one of Europe’s more expensive destinations, especially for hotels and dining. However, many Baltic ports you’ll visit afterward are considerably more affordable.

What’s summer weather like in Copenhagen?

Summer temperatures are generally pleasant, often in the 60s and 70s°F, but weather changes quickly. Pack layers and always bring a lightweight rain jacket.

How long is daylight during summer?

Summer days are incredibly long. In early July, sunrise can be before 4:30 a.m., while sunset approaches 10:00 p.m. An eye mask is a surprisingly useful item to pack.

Should I reserve attractions in advance?

GoBoat rentals should absolutely be booked ahead during good weather. Most museums and the Round Tower can often be visited without advance reservations, though I highly recommend arranging a private walking tour for a richer understanding of the city’s history and culture.
