Bornholm is a Danish island in the southern Baltic where Danes and Swedes go to slow down, and where few Americans go at all. Here’s why it became my favorite unexpected day of the cruise — the hyper-local food, the coastal bike paths, and the ten thousand years of history in a very small museum.

If you look at a Baltic cruise itinerary and see a stop at Rønne, on the Danish island of Bornholm, you may be tempted to skip it in favor of a staying onboard and relaxing. Don’t. This was, unexpectedly, one of my favorite days of the entire cruise — and it’s the closest thing to an actual hidden gem I found in two weeks of hidden-gem hunting.

The Food Alone Justifies the Stop
Foodie alert: I had one of the best salads of my life in Bornholm, down a small alley, in a restaurant I found by wandering. I was served freshly baked bread and butter that made me stop talking and almost finish the entire basket, which I NEVER do. Locally brewed beer was delish!
This is not an accident. Bornholm has built a serious reputation for hyper-local food — fresh produce, traditional smokehouses, microbreweries, dairies. It’s an island where “farm to table” isn’t a marketing phrase; it’s just geography. The whole culture here is oriented around eating and drinking exceptionally well at an unhurried pace.
If you have one meal in Bornholm, walk until something looks yummy or ask me for my favorite spot :).
Slow Down and Look Around
The pace is the point. Bornholm is an artists’ haven with a long history, and it wears that lightly — shops, restaurants, beaches, and a general permission to do less.
I made a short stop at the Bornholm Museum, which turned out to be small but genuinely well done. The island’s position in the southern Baltic has drawn settlers and traders since prehistoric times, and roughly ten thousand years of that history is laid out here — ancient artifacts, maritime history, the whole arc.
The other stop worth making is St. Nikolai Church in Rønne, a beautiful white church with a round congregation area. It’s striking in a way that photographs don’t quite convey.
💎 Hidden Gem Tip: Bornholm is a fantastic cycling destination. You can rent bikes or e-bikes and ride the coastal path around the island — the views and scenery are extraordinary, and the wildflowers in summer are worth the ride on their own. If you have the time and the energy in port, this is how I’d spend the day.
Ready to Plan Your Baltic Cruise?
Note that I didn’t get beach weather. Bornholm has lovely beaches, but I still had a wonderful day. When a place is good enough that bad weather doesn’t ruin it, the place is good. Pack a rain jacket, bring layers, and let the island be what it is on the day you get it.
Not all Baltic itineraries include Bornholm — and the ones that do aren’t always the ones that get marketed hardest. Choosing the right ship and the right route is exactly the kind of decision where a travel advisor earns their keep.

Whether you can circle the whole island depends on your fitness and how many hours you have in port — but even a partial ride along the coast is worthwhile.
Do I need a tour in Bornholm? Rønne is compact and easily explored on foot, and the pleasure of the island is partly in wandering. That said, a guide adds real value if you want to understand the island’s history or find the best food without trial and error. Yes, if you want a cycling tour around the island.
