Trip Report: Incredible Japan!

Have you been watching the Winter Olympics in northern Italy? If Italy is on your 2026 travel list, now is the time to start planning — the best luxury hotels, private guides, and unique experiences book well in advance.

But today, I’m taking you to Japan — where I spent an unforgettable Thanksgiving trading turkey for sushi.

This past fall, I experienced Japan at one of the most beautiful times of year: late November, when vibrant autumn foliage transforms parks, temples, and city streets into a photographer’s dream. With comfortable weather, fewer crowds than peak spring season, and extraordinary cultural experiences, it quickly became one of my favorite long-haul destinations for luxury family travel.

Yes, the nonstop flight from New York City is about 14 hours — but like most bucket-list destinations, Japan is absolutely worth it. And if you can fly Business or First Class, even better.

This was also a true “bleisure” trip — my family joined me — which reinforced what I tell clients all the time: Japan is an ideal multi-generational and family destination.

This is Part 1 of my two-part Japan trip report (though it could easily be five). Below are my key takeaways and recommended experiences to help you begin planning your own custom Japan itinerary.

Why Japan Is the Ultimate Luxury Family Destination

1. A Destination for Every Age & Interest

Japan offers something for everyone:

  • Anime and Pokémon for kids
  • Ancient temples and shrines for history lovers
  • Cutting-edge technology for curious minds
  • Michelin-level dining for foodies
  • Stunning landscapes for photographers

Whether you love pagodas or pop culture, Japan delivers.

2. A Country of Beautiful Contrasts

Japan seamlessly blends:

  • Ancient traditions and centuries-old architecture
  • Neon cityscapes and vibrant urban districts
  • Bullet trains and high-tech innovations (yes, even the toilets!)
  • Quiet tea ceremonies and energetic street life

Few destinations balance modern luxury and deep cultural heritage as beautifully as Japan.

3. Manners & Cultural Respect Matter

Politeness is a way of life in Japan. From quiet subway rides in Tokyo to gracious hospitality in hotels and ryokans, respect and kindness shape every interaction. Even a simple “arigatou gozaimasu” goes a long way.

4. Japan Is a Photographer’s Dream

From silk kimonos to golden temple gardens, every corner offers visual beauty. If you love travel photography, your camera will never rest.

💎 Hidden Gem Tip: Travel in late fall for spectacular foliage without peak spring crowds.

Curated Experiences to Add to Your Japan Itinerary

One of the keys to an extraordinary trip to Japan is incorporating exclusive, hands-on experiences. Here are some of my top recommendations:

  • Private sumo or samurai swordsmanship experience
  • Meet a real-life Maiko (a geisha in training)
  • Private sushi-making class with a master chef
  • Taiko drumming workshop
  • Origami or Japanese painting lesson
  • Rent a kimono for a cultural photo session
  • Traditional tea ceremony with explanation
  • Kabuki Theater performance with guide/translator
  • Stay in a luxury ryokan with onsen hot springs
  • Family photo shoot with a local photographer
  • Seasonal skiing or summer golf

💎 Hidden Gem Moment: One of my favorite “surprise and delight” experiences was attending a local festival in Tokyo’s Asakusa district — a celebration where Japanese business owners gather to pray for good fortune.n unforgettable and amazing year for new travel adventures! Let’s go…

Important Logistics When Planning a Trip to Japan

Japan is incredibly safe, efficient, and welcoming — but there are important logistics to consider:

  • Train passes and seat reservations
  • Luggage forwarding between cities
  • Cultural etiquette and timing
  • Seasonal weather considerations
  • Access to exclusive experiences

This is exactly why working with an experienced luxury travel advisor makes all the difference. In Part 2 of my Japan trip report, I’ll share deeper insights into itinerary planning, accommodations, and insider strategies.
