Smart flying: timely air travel tips to reduce stress

Happy Thursday Hidden Gem Travel community! The ongoing US government shutdown is affecting flights nationwide. These US government shutdown air travel tips will help you prepare and travel confidently. The timing is particularly challenging with Thanksgiving being only a couple of weeks away when many people take to the skies for the holiday. I share this information as a helpful resource noting that the information shared is accurate as of this moment. Always check official sites for the most current information.

Due to the US government shutdown, the FAA is temporarily reducing flight volume at some U.S. airports to ensure safety while managing staffing shortages. This may cause delays or rebookings. International flights are not currently affected.

If you’re a Hidden Gem Travel client traveling this month, you will already have heard from me about your individual situation. My air partner provides 24/7 support to help navigate changes to your air itinerary. Their contact information is in your itinerary, and you can reach out to me as well if you have concerns.

For others, below are some helpful tips if you or someone you know is traveling soon – or save this email as a resource for when air travel is expected to the chaotic in the future. I always recommend downloading your airline app and turning on notifications once you’ve booked a flight.

Credit goes to my professional organization, The American Society of Travel Advisors – aka ASTA, for keeping us informed. Read on for the scoop.

Start Planning My Trip

BEFORE You Fly

The tips below are helpful now and in the future:

  • Arrive earlier than usual, as TSA wait times are increasing at many airports. Download the MyTSA app for real-time updates.
  • Book nonstop or early-morning flights, which are less likely to face cascading delays.
  • Book flexible or refundable fares in case of cancellations or airspace adjustments.
  • Enable airline apps and alerts and confirm contact details (phone and email) for updates.
  • Verify flight status before leaving home or your hotel.
  • Carry all necessary identification, travel documents, and any required visas, especially if government services are affected or delayed.
  • Pack essentials in your carry-on luggage, such as medications, chargers, important documents, and snacks, in case you face unexpected delays.
  • Be flexible with your plans—such as alternative routes, dates, or nearby airports—to reduce stress and find workable solutions if disruptions occur.
  • At the airport: use airport lounges and premium credit card benefits to make delays more comfortable.

💎Hidden Gem Tip: Check airport social media feeds for the latest information.

Disruptions, Delays, and Cancellations

What to Watch For:

  • Smaller and regional airports may face greater disruptions due to limited staffing.
  • Monitor FAA and TSA advisories for evolving guidance during the shutdown.
  • Use airline apps, flight trackers, and text/email alerts to stay informed in real time.

Delays & Cancellations:

  • When the airline is responsible for a delay or cancellation, use the DOT’s Airline Cancellation Dashboard (https://www.transportation.gov) to see what the airline promises during disruptions (meals, hotels, rebooking, etc.).
  • Airlines aren’t required to cover hotels or meals for weather-related issues, but many will for controllable delays (crew or maintenance).
  • If a flight is canceled or significantly delayed, travelers are entitled to a refund if they choose not to travel.

A Word About Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance Tips

  • Verify coverage for trip delay, interruption, or missed connection benefits. Travel insurance may not automatically cover shutdown-related delays. Make sure to review terms carefully.
  • Keep receipts for meals, hotels, and transportation in case you need to file a claim.
  • Contact your insurer directly for clarification before making changes or purchases.

*NOTE:  I recommend travel insurance to my clients as its many benefits can be extremely valuable should you need it.  Like any insurance, it can protect you from the unexpected. I’ve seen this many times.

To travel is to live… here’s to 2026 being an unforgettable and amazing year for new travel adventures! Let’s go…
